Oh, I remember the days when 35 and gloomy seemed like bad weather to me. London’s still shaking off the snow – the streets are sludgy and the grumpy locals are looking haughtier than usual. It is more like 26 and entirely unpleasant but that doesn’t really have the same ring to it…
Credit to Wyatt for tipping me off on the Feed Me/Gemini track ‘Whiskers’ last week. It is a stone cold banger, highlighting the most redeeming aspects of both of their styles, hovering in some indecipherable genre and bringing the heaviness but keeping it fun and upbeat. It is my favorite EDM track of the year thus far. The structure progresses and doesn’t repeat much and every development is as pleasing as the last. I can’t get enough of it.
Another Friday at Fabric and more epic tales of debauchery abound. I imagined to successfully ignore Chase and Status in a fit of oh-so-predictable elitism. KOAN Sound and Scratch Perverts set the place on fire but I entered with an inkling that they would do as much. Wilkinson was a find for me. He’s got the look of some Eton wanker but his liquid drum n’ bass stylings were undeniable. He eschews the overt heaviness of a lot of London dnb in favor of more progressive musical elements and a lighter vibe. He’s on Ram Records who often host nights at Fabric and put out a lot of really good stuff including Delta Heavy and Sub Focus.
He’s got a new EP out but below is an older track of his. I took a gander at his newer material and it has the whole soulful-woman-singing-over-dnb vibe which is kind of a turn off for me, but this one is a good’un.
Here is a drumstep remix of one of his newer tracks. It is worth a listen. Sorry for the image of the creepy Georgian guy but it was the only complete version of this track on soundcloud.
And lastly, definitely check out Barbarix. Dude is on the up but very underground at the moment. This track ‘The Boxer’ is a frenetic electro jam of aneurysm-inducing proportions.
Until next time. I should go buy an umbrella in the meantime.
